Hi Eagles, proud to say Glenda was my cousin. A very sweet caring and smart woman. She graduated from Pembroke and at the time of death she was a student of University of Alabama to become a Doctor. She will always be missed. Her daughter Amanda is married now smart like her Mom and so beautiful. She is going to have a sweet baby. I wish so much Glenda was here to enjoy this time with her daughter. Our family will forever miss Glenda .

Obituary

Tribute

From Tammy Lindsay Levanger on December 30th, 2009
I love you still Billy Arnold and you are often discussed in our household.  My children grew up with your picture on the wall.l   The "raise not the roof" plaque that you gave John and I has been proudly displayed over a doorway in every house I have ever called home.  You were the first person who knew that John and I were getting married and I can see you leaving my place for that last time just as clearly as if it were yesterday.    I will never forget leaving the funeral home after your serviceand seeing the big 'ole monkey hanging out of someone's car window....we were all certain that you somehow had a hand in that so that we would stop crying in order to laugh....and we did, oh how we laughed! Blue Skies Forever says it all.  Love ya and miss ya.

Mr A was the best chemistry teacher I ever had, even through college. I always loved to pick at him about the state-carolina rivalry. He is one of the reasons I am an educator today.

I remember once in Chemistry II, they announced that the bathrooms were going to be closed, so we sent a beaker of warm yellow colored fluid to the office, with a note saying we couldn't wait- he was a real prankster :)

From Ferris Hickman Delionbach on November 29th, 2012
Mr. A taught me 9th grade biology in Garland NC. If I remember correctly, it was his first year teaching or at least one of the first. He was probably one of the hardest teachers, but he made learning in his classroom fun. When in college taking biology, I then realized what a good teacher he was.

I grew up about 3 or 4 houses from Danny and the Byrd family. They were and always will be like family to me. Danny was a quiet gentle young man. He was always asking me how I was doing. In other words he was a caring human being. Even though we had not seen each other in years you and the Byrd family were always in my thoughts. Miss you brother.

From Joe Tanguay on April 19th, 2018
Tonight I'm saddened to hear that Danny passed away a number of years ago.  I went to school with Danny when we were in the 8th and 9th grade.  My father was military thus we lived in Fayetteville for a short time.  We moved on with new orders after my Freshman year.  I got to now Danny in the 8th grade in Mr. Tharington's class.  The name of the school escapes me now.  I remember when we went on a trip to New York and then Washington DC.  We had such a grand time seeing the Big Apple and then visiting the Capitol.  Danny was always so kind to me in school.  I was the new Northern (from Maine) kid in town and he always was ready to tease me because of my strange accent.  Danny was so kind to everyone.  I live in Washington state now and call it home.  Recently I have been anxious about our 40th reunion coming up.  I graduated from Cheney High School which is on the eastern side of the state.  Went on and joined the Navy, 24 years, retired and now I teach school.  I would love to touch base with some of the old crew back in North Carolina.  If anyone reads this in the near future, know that all my memories of North Carolina are fond ones, Douglas Byrd High School was great!  I loved playing football for the  Eagles!  I lettered my Freshman year and am so proud of that jacket!  Coach Chapman took me under his wing and let me play!  I'm honored to have been able to pay tribute to Danny with this memorial.  We will see each other again in heaven I'm sure someday.  Joe Tanguay 360-969-0214  ljtanguay@juno.com

Coach by the time I got to your class in 1985 you had long since quit coaching but you still loved the game. I remember how we used to talk about when you played football. We used to joke that obviously it was when there were no face guards and you would laugh. We talked more about football than the History we were supposed to be learning.
You coached my brothers Mike (class of '74) and Keith (class of '76). I admit I did shed a tear when I heard of your passing. You were a good guy and you cared about your students. Image  Coach Chapman,  You were an awesome coach to this young Freshman!  I was lucky enough to have played for you in the Fall of 1974 at DBHS.  I remember starting out with the JV squad and you moved me up at the begining of the season.  I was very intimidated by the maturity of the players on the Varsity squad and yet the guys were very respectful of me as I worked my butt off bangin heads and takin my licks.  I was so proud to be playing on the varisty squad.  I remember riding on the bus to Wilmington-Hoggard and you had me sit up front with you.  Riding up front with the coach!  I thought I was so cool.  I believe on the ride down to the game that afternoon a pickup truck passed us and standing up in the back of the truck was a 70's phenomena, a streaker!  We were all laughing so hard!  During the game you would call me off the bench and tell me to go in and play Offensive Tackle or Defensive
End.  I was so nervous! I lettered that year and I'm still so proud of having attained that letter!  My father was in the military then and he recieved orders to go to Washington state at the end of the school year. We moved and I played ball at another team, the Cheney High School "Blackhawks".  I love that team and had a wonderful time in High School and yet I always wonder what would have happened if I had stayed and kept playing for the mighty Eagles!  Thank you Coach Chapman!  You gave me so much inspiration to play football!  Joe Tanguay

Obituary

Sandra “Sandy” Kaye Bullington Harris, 59, went to be with her Lord, Monday evening, February 22nd. She was born April 20, 1956 and was the daughter of William T. Bullington, Sr. and the late Mary Kathryn Canady Bullington. Sandy was also preceded in death by her brother William T. Bullington, Jr.

Funeral Service will be conducted 7:00 pm Saturday, February 27th at Green Springs Baptist Church, 1095 E Green Springs Rd., Parkton, NC. The Committal Service will be 2:00 pm Sunday at Green Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sandy graduated from Douglas Byrd High School in 1974 and she also attended Fayetteville Technical School. She was the middle child and married a middle child. Sandy always put others concerns above her own. She loved her family, church, talking and she never met a stranger-just someone she had not talked to yet. She loved children, letting people know about how God has a plan for us all, hunting, and fishing; anything outdoors as long as it was not too cold.

Sandy was always involved in many activities. In grade school, she was a Majorette. She carried this love to high school where she was a Majorette and twirled a fire baton and was a member of the Drill Team. She was also a member of the Leo Club. In her adult life, she was a Cub Scout leader, Girl Scout Leader, Rockfish Archery club Sec-Treas and V.P., NWTF, Friends of NRA, NCWRC Becoming an Outdoors Woman Archery Instructor, QDMA Ft. Bragg and Co-Owner of The Archery Clinic.

Sandy often referred to “her church” Green Springs Baptist Church. Her mother attended Green Springs as a child and as soon as Sandy attended Green Springs, she felt like she was Home. She loved her Sunday School Class. She said she was going to get Teddy to church and sadly it was only after she got cancer. Teddy promised her that day that because she loved the church so much, he would get her to church as often as he could if she was physically able. Teddy's love for Sandy and God was evident in the ways he cared for her. It was amazing to see how her eyes would light up when she got to church even when she was not completely able. She especially loved the singing, oh how she loved the singing, but she also loved the sermon as she underlined and notated in her bible with her broken binder as a testament to that. Sandy on many occasions has said “God has a plan we just don’t know what it is yet”. With each occurrence during the 2 ½ years of battling cancer she always said “God has a plan we just don’t know what it is yet.”

If you cannot remember anything else about Sandy, please remember right to the very end as long as she could talk, she always told everyone "God has a plan." And always to her, everyone else’s concerns came before her own.

Sandy loved her God, her Family and her Country in that order and stood strong in defense of all the above to the fullest of her ability.

Sandy is survived by her husband of 41 years, 7 months, 2 days and 12 hours, John “Teddy” Harris; son and daughter-in-law, John C. Harris III and Tabea of Germany; daughter, Windy Renee Harris Young of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Ben Michael Young and Tiffany Kathryn-Faye Melvin both of Fayetteville; father, William T. Bullington, Sr. of Princeton, sisters, Dorothea Jane Bullington Fox and husband Charles of Ocean Isle, Pamela Lynne Bullington Vanherpen and husband Ken of Colorado, and Martha Jeanne Bullington Casey and husband Craig of Princeton.

The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 pm Saturday until 7:00 pm and immediately following the service at Green Springs Baptist Church.

I will always remember talking to Jim 2 weeks before he passed away.  I feel Jim knew his life was about to come to an end.  He posted a public message on Facebook with his cell phone number and asked everyone that knew him to give him a call in the hospital.  I was one of those people.  He and I talked for almost an hour.  In our conversation  Jim told me about how he died and was brought back during his surgery.  He told me he saw the image of God and Jesus standing behind him.  God sent him back, but Jim said, he was in no pain anymore and he tried to stay.  Jim told me he talked to Jesus and to God.  Jim returned and he came back with a missionary plan.  He wanted to buy older school buses and transform the bus into a rescue bus filled with needed supplies to use in a disaster.  He  had already bought one bus before he died.  It was sitting waiting for him to begin his plan.  Jim was my friend.  He had an enormous heart filled with the love and kindness for everyone he would ever meet. He was a Christian and all his trust was in Jesus.  When I spoke to Jim 2 weeks before he left this world he sounded great even if he had been in the hospital for a very long time.  There is a huge hole in my heart because I should have read between the lines.....Jim was telling every good bye in his own way.  That's why he urged everyone to call him in the hospital.  He was telling me good-bye, but I didnt know it until after he left.

I will always remember Kay for her love for life and ability to make everyone laugh!
Such an adventurous spirit, she was fearless, bold and determined. She dared to challenge what many of us would not. Kay lived life on her own terms, and certainly never let other people hold her back. While we were very different in so many ways, I admired her courage and strength, and her sweetness hidden beneath the surface that only a few she chose to reveal it to, knew. I was one of those few.

She is finally free again, no more pain & suffering.
God rest your soul Kay.

Obituary

Marcus (Mark) H Pritchett was married to Kathleen Pritchett and they had one son, Shawn Pritchett 4936 Walnut Drive, Fayetteville, NC - Mark died on or about June 3, 2011, and was cremated. No obituary was found…

I’m sure most of us would agree that the people we most cared from our past are more often thought about during the holidays. A good friend of mine who often does research for me found the above information.  Over many years, I had visited Mark while visiting my family in North Carolina. David Creech, along with Gene Gaskins and his younger brother, Randy, Mark and me all spent most of our free time together being great childhood friends, and all graduates of Douglas Byrd.

Mark was known to be the quieter one. We also gave him the most crap. His father and mother were hard working people, and as an only son, Mark was clearly the heartbeat of their joy as parents.  Mark had lost his father rather young, but his mom lived on in the same house on Walnut until she too died. Mark inherited and lived in the house on Walnut Drive until his death. Over the years when I visited Mark, again only on Holidays, as my family house was close by, I enjoyed catching up with him.

It was during a visit around Thanksgiving of 2012, I learned from some neighbor kids that Mark had died. They told me he had been out mowing the lawn when the temperatures were very high, and had suffered a heat stroke.  Mark was a good friend, and I’m sharing this so that those of you who knew him could also reflect on his passing. Even with the many pledges of everlasting friendship that we all have in our yearbooks, time is short and although we move on through life far too quickly, special moments with the people we knew from high school and even elementary school stay with us.

As we all look back and appreciate those youthful experiences, good and bad, I believe most of us will always fondly recall everyone we learned with, laughed with, and loved. Let’s also remember and honor Mark’s passing. We lost a funny, kind, light hearted, hard working father, son, husband and dear friend.

David was one of my best friends in high school and, after losing touch for many years, we were able to reconnect in 2009 via Facebook.  He was already sick at that time but I was glad to  be able to have conversations with him again before the Lord called him home.  I have nothing but great memories of our times together.

I wish I could have known David as a young carefree teenager. I also wish all of you could have known the wonderful caring man he grew into. David had a love of life that was with him until the end. According to the stories he shared of his younger years, he didn't change all that much! He will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. I will miss you most of all my love.

So many great memories of both Ricky & Ronnie...
Twins with great musical talent!
Ricky spent many an evening at our house playing guitar with my former husband Stan. Then years later Ricky played professionally and we followed to hear him whenever we could. Last time I heard him play he was playing with David Flores (another DBHS friend of ours) and they were great!

I was shocked to hear of his death. What we all have lost is heavens gain.

From Eric Quigley on February 12th, 2010
My brother Keith Quigley graduated with Ken Strong from Byrd in 1976 and was shocked to hear of his untimely passing.
Keith said that "Kenny" was one of the nicest persons he'd ever met. Keith said that Ken knew exactly what he wanted to do and that was to Act. We all should be so lucky to fulfill our dreams as Ken did. As a side note my oldest brother Michael Quigley died from complications due to a brain tumor as well as David Tubb another Byrd Grad.

I would like to leave with a fitting quote from the play Julius Cesar by Shakespear that perhaps Ken may have acted.

Marcus Atonius:  His life was gentle; and the elements
So mixt in him, that Nature
                                  might stand up
And say to all the world,
                                  "This was a man!"

Johnny and I were childhood friends that grew up together and graduated the same year. The last time I saw Johnny is when he visited me in Georgia at the birth of my first born in 1980. His memories will remain in my heart forever.

As a member of the Varsity Basketball team I was always amazed at Johnny's amazing jumping ability and his confidence.  He wouldn't back down from any challenge.  A great athlete.

Johnny was one of the most competitive athletes I've ever known. I have never seen and athlete fight thru injury and pain the way he did. Biggest heart ever put in a man's chest. Rest Well my friend!!!!
